Have you ever come across your lawn and flowers in the backyard that just doesn’t quite look like it’s been watered for a long period? Even though you have, consistently every week but it still seems quite dead inside? Don’t worry; you are not alone. It’s one of the most common questions we get asked when it comes to landscape maintenance. Here are some helpful tips to be efficient when watering your backyard.
Water in the morning.
Not many homeowners know this, but watering early in the morning when sunlight is weakest will help neutralize and allow the soil to absorb water compared to the evening when it is warm which can attract insects, fungus, and other diseases.
Water the plant base.
Depending on the size of the plants, watering from the base will avoid wetting foliage which invites fungus. If watered above (especially tall plants) the water may not even hit the ground because the foliage may overshadow the plant’s base.
Mulch.
If you’re looking to maintain your plants all year round, consider investing in mulch. Mulch can cool soil and retains moisture. Tip: do not water un-mulched soil as the force will splatter plants with moist soil and cause runoff.
Trees and Shrubs
Whether it was recently planted or not, it is best to water them directly every 7 to 10 days as you can’t rely on sprinklers and irrigation systems to reach the base depending on where you place them.
Water with care.
During dry spells (in particular the Summer) give your lawn at least an inch of water every week or for sprinklers run around 90 minutes. Staying consistent is a number one rule for a healthy lawn care.
